CCTV Case Study 1 - Europe's 1st Low Bandwidth CCTV System
The Problem
Torfaen County Borough Council had a requirement for monitoring anti social behaviour in the public areas in and around the historic town of Blaenavon, at the very top of the Gwent valley. An estimated 8 external fully functional camera locations were considered and were to be linked back to the County Hall via a new Fibre optic link. When costs for running this link in were assessed it was found that they would have been in the hundreds of thousands of pounds, which therefore put the entire project on stop.
The Solution
AVA Security designed a system which would allow the CCTV pictures to be streamed down the existing network channels, but using ultra low bandwidth technology. This therefore did not have any negative effect on the data speeds of all the other Council traffic operating on the network, whilst having the ability to be installed for around 15% of the original project. The project has been so successful that other towns within the Borough, such as Pontypool and Cwmbran, have been added onto the system.
End User Benefits
All cameras are recorded in broadcast quality and in real time, giving the Council and Gwent Police a very effective evidence tool and enhancing Public Safety. This has been completed on time and massively within budget, with an estimated saving to the people of Torfaen of nearly £200,000.
