AVA Security & Communications were chosen to design and install the automatic bollards and barriers for the new entrance at ABP Cardiff Docks. This system was to tie in with the automatic number plate recognition and enhanced CCTV system already in place, with a view to making the Dock entrance more secure and operationally effective.
The system requirement was for two controlled lanes entering into and out of the dock security gate station. The two lanes were also to have a timed entrance lane, so that after hours one lane was to be securely closed down completely. The entire system was to be automatically controlled via the ANPR linked to our traffic lights.
AVA Security used four sets of CAME automatic barrier arms which came with a full set of safety systems, such as top flashing lights and a lights down the barrier arm, along with Fadini rising bollards. Eight sets of safety loops were cut into the tarmac roadways to ensure there would be no accidental damage caused to any vehicles. The CAME and Fadini equipment was chosen due to its reputation as the best in the industry for both reliability and safety features.
The project was hampered in part by the depth of the water table this close to the sea and also the Health & Safety aspect by working in close proximity to the busy throughfare which needed to remain operationally open during the term of our works.
Richard Beynon, Technical Director at AVA Security & Communications, said: “Despite all the issues that were thrown at us, from the horrific weather storms, large amounts of civil works and the need to work within stringent Health & Safety conditions, the installation was completed within the allowed timescale and to a competitive budget. Best of all for me however was that it all worked seamlessly -first time”
